As of this year (2021), the Upstate region of South Carolina has the highest homeless population in the state. In response to the growing homeless population in the Upstate, specifically Anderson, The LOT Project offers services to help people in the community get back on their feet and keep their sense of stability and dignity.
As of January 2019, South Carolina had an estimated 4,100 people experiencing homelessness, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This includes families, veterans, young adults, and even schoolchildren. On any given night, eight in every 10,000 people sleep without shelter in South Carolina.
Many people believe that the homeless and transient members of our community are just “lazy”. People say they should “just get a job” so they can take care of themselves. The reality is more challenging. Beyond the challenges presented by COVID in the past year – many members of this population struggle with complex issues including addiction, mental health, disability, and lack of access to basic needs like housing, reliable transportation, and healthcare. The will and ability to work is one small piece in the very large puzzle of long-term recovery. And navigating the network of available support systems can be discouraging, time-consuming, and exhausting.
The LOT Project works hard to serve those in need in our city, to provide the most basic needs like food and clothing, but also to be a welcoming place of rest and peace. We offer encouragement, prayer, and the opportunity for those in need to find a solution (or solutions) that will move them along on their path to recovery – even if that path is long and difficult. We need your support, and we are grateful for your assistance.
– for your prayers.
– for your time and efforts.
– for your physical and financial donations.
Thank you!
